How to Check if a Windows App Is Running Native Arm64 or Emulated

On a Windows on Arm PC, apps can run as native Arm64, as emulated x64/x86, or as a hybrid. Windows tells you exactly which — once you know where to look.
Method 1: Task Manager (30 seconds)
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Go to the Details tab.
- Right-click any column header → Select columns → tick Architecture.
- Read the new column while your apps are running.
What the values mean:
- ARM64 — fully native. Best performance and battery. ✓
- x64 / x86 — running through Prism emulation. Fine for most software, with some overhead.
- ARM64 (x64 compatible) — ARM64EC hybrid: the app’s core is native while some components remain emulated. Common in big apps mid-migration.
Method 2: PowerShell one-liner
For a quick inventory of everything currently running:
Get-Process | Select-Object Name, @{n='Arch';e={$_.StartInfo.EnvironmentVariables['PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE']}}
Or simpler — tasklist /v plus Task Manager for spot checks. The Task Manager column remains the most reliable view.
Method 3: Check before you install
You don’t have to install first. Look the app up in our database: every entry’s verdict line states whether it runs natively or under emulation, since which version, and when that was last verified. For apps that ship both builds, the store/installer usually picks the right one automatically — but a few vendors hide the Arm64 build behind a separate download link.
